Waitangi Weekend, Saturday 3rd - Tuesday 6th February 2024

Itinerary

Day 1

Travel from Auckland
to Hokianga

Saturday 3rd February

Private bus transporting us to Hokianga leaving Auckland at 8am.

Visit Waipoua Forest to practice 拜祭 (baai3 zai3, bài jì) at the cemetery (urupā) and pay respects to ancestors who were aboard the SS Ventnor. 

First night stay will be at Te Whakamaharatanga Marae.


Day 2

Returning Pāruru

Sunday 4th February

Travel to Manea and be welcomed with a pōwhiri. Closely followed with the momentous return of the Pou Whenua. This historic moment signifies our deep connection to Hokianga and Aotearoa. 

We will have time to connect with local iwi building our Māori-Chinese relationships by connecting with and paying respects to tangata whenua. 

The second night will be spent in Mitimiti.


Visit Mitimiti

Monday 5th February

Day 3

Mitimiti is a spiritual place where a gift from Te Rarawa sits. This memorial honours our shared history and connection with the land.

We will stay in motel accommodation in Keri Keri. 


Day 4

Attending Dawn Service
at Waitangi

Tuesday 6th February

On our final day we will represent NZCA at Waitangi Day commemorations under the guidance of Meng Foon.

At the conclusion of the ceremonies, a bus will return to Auckland in the evening (ETA 6pm).

Cost

This journey is subsidised by the NZCA but will be in part self funded. The estimated cost for the trip for travel to and from Auckland, accommodation, food and activities is $500.
