To strengthen our identity & connection to Aotearoa New Zealand through a cultural journey.

Our Purpose

Our Name - ‘Pāruru’

Translates as ‘A Place of Shelter’ and is inspired by the pou whenua gifted by local leaders in the Hokianga to the NZCA community at the unveiling of the SS Ventnor memorial. Pāruru will be returned to the area as a part of the 2024 journey.

Our Symbol

Represents our ‘place of shelter’ for Chinese, past and present in Aotearoa and our connection to the people and iwi in the Hokianga.

Our Guiding Proverb

We are not only thankful for the water: but thankful for all the elements and processes (both past and present) that allowed us to enjoy a humble cup of water.

飲水思源

When you drink water,
think of its source

Our Focus

Heritage & Whakapapa

Celebrating our shared heritage as Chinese New Zealanders. Through deepening awareness of our whakapapa and the journeys that brought our ancestors here, we acknowledge them and the place we call home.

Current Place

Our physical place and our place in time reflects on what has gone before and what lies ahead. Understanding how Te Tiriti and other founding documents have allowed us to build a life here and how we honour it in the future.

Future Relationships

Connecting with Tangata Whenua as people who have, through time, provided a ‘place of shelter’. Reciprocating their respect shown to us and our ancestors in Aotearoa as we connect within our own identity. Strengthening these relationships for the future.
